Cookie Policy
Effective date: 14 August 2026
This policy explains what cookies are, which ones Bible Chat sets, why, and how you can turn them off.
It covers the websites we run, including verseread.com and thebiblechat.com and their subdomains, and it should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which describes how we handle personal information generally, and our Terms and Conditions.
The sites are operated by BookVitals Inc, 2093 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, USA ("Bible Chat", "we" or "us").
The short version. Some cookies keep the site working and the checkout secure, and we cannot switch those off. The rest measure how the site performs and whether an advert we paid for actually led anywhere. By continuing through the onboarding you are agreeing to the cookies described here. If you would rather not, Section 6 shows you how to stop them, and you can do that at any point. Blocking the necessary ones will break checkout.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a site puts on your device so it can recognise that device on later requests. It is how a site remembers what you did a moment ago.
We also use a few things that behave like cookies without technically being one: browser local storage and session storage, and pixels, which are small scripts or images that report back that a page loaded or a button was tapped. Where this policy says "cookies", it means all of these.
Two words worth knowing:
- A first-party cookie is set by the site you are actually visiting, which here means us.
- A third-party cookie is set by another company whose code runs on our site, such as our payment processor or an advertising network. We choose who runs on our site, but we do not control what those companies do with what they collect. Their own policies govern that.
2. Why we use them
Four reasons, and nothing else:
- To make the product work. To keep your quiz answers attached to your session as you move through it, to run a payment, and to spot fraud. Without these the site does not function.
- To see what is broken. To understand which screens people reach, where they give up, and whether a change made things better or worse.
- To measure advertising. To tell whether an advert we paid for led to a visit, a signup or a purchase, and to let advertising platforms show relevant adverts.
- To remember your choices, such as your language.
We do not use cookies to build a profile of your religious beliefs, and we do not sell what you say to Bible Chat.
3. The cookies we set
Names and lifetimes below are set by the providers and can change without us being told. Where a provider renames a cookie, the purpose described here still applies.
| Name | Set by | What it does | Lifetime | Category | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ob_uid | Bible Chat | Gives your visit a random identifier so the answers you give, the screen you are on, and any purchase you make can be recognised as the same session. This is what lets us deliver what you paid for. | 2 years | Necessary | First-party |
| __stripe_mid | Stripe | Lets our payment processor recognise the device and detect fraudulent payments. | 1 year | Necessary | Third-party |
| __stripe_sid | Stripe | Ties together the steps of a single checkout and helps detect fraudulent payments. | 30 minutes | Necessary | Third-party |
| ph_*_posthog | PostHog | Product analytics. Records which screens are seen and which actions are taken so we can find where the experience breaks. Served through our own domain. | 1 year | Analytics | First-party |
| _ga | Google Analytics | Tells visitors apart so we can produce aggregate usage statistics. | 2 years | Analytics | Third-party |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Tells visitors apart so we can produce aggregate usage statistics. | 24 hours | Analytics | Third-party |
| _fbp | Meta | Identifies the browser so Meta can deliver adverts and report whether a Facebook or Instagram advert led to a signup or purchase. | 3 months | Advertising | Third-party |
| _fbc | Meta | Stores the advert click identifier from the link you arrived on, so a later purchase can be credited to that advert. | 3 months | Advertising | Third-party |
| _ttp | TikTok | Measures whether a TikTok advert led to a signup or purchase, and supports advert delivery. | 13 months | Advertising | Third-party |
| _rdt_uuid | Measures whether a Reddit advert led to a signup or purchase, and supports advert delivery. | 3 months | Advertising | Third-party | |
| _scid | Snapchat | Measures whether a Snapchat advert led to a signup or purchase, and supports advert delivery. | 13 months | Advertising | Third-party |
| _pin_unauth | Groups actions from signed-out visitors so Pinterest advert performance can be measured. | 1 year | Advertising | Third-party | |
| _epik | Stores an identifier used to credit a signup or purchase to a Pinterest advert. | 1 year | Advertising | Third-party |
We sometimes send the same measurement events to these providers from our servers rather than from your browser. That does not rely on a cookie on your device, so it is described in our Privacy Policy rather than here.
4. What happens if you block them
- Block necessary cookies and checkout will not complete, and your progress through a quiz will be lost between screens. There is no way around this: the session identifier is how we know which order belongs to you.
- Block analytics cookies and everything still works. We simply lose the ability to see which parts of the product are failing.
- Block advertising cookies and everything still works. You will still see adverts, they will just be less relevant, and we will be less able to tell which of our adverts were worth paying for.
5. Our legal basis
How your choice is given. This page is the notice. It tells you, before you go any further, exactly which cookies we set, who sets them, and what each one is for. If you carry on through the onboarding after reading it, we take that as your agreement to the cookies described above. Nothing is hidden behind a button you have to hunt for: the table in Section 3 is the whole list.
Changing your mind costs you nothing. Your agreement is not permanent and it is not a condition of getting your money's worth. Section 6 lists the browser and platform controls that stop these cookies at source, and they work whenever you use them. You can also write to us at [email protected] and ask us to stop processing your information for analytics or advertising. That reaches a person who will apply it to your record by hand.
What we rely on. For the strictly necessary cookies, that they are required to deliver the service you asked us for. For analytics and advertising, your agreement as described above, together with our legitimate interest in understanding how the product performs and whether our advertising works.
If you are in the United States, your state may give you the right to opt out of targeted advertising and of the sale or sharing of personal information. Use the controls in Section 6, or email us at the address above and we will action the request.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you have stronger rights than this. The law there generally expects your active agreement before non-essential cookies are set, rather than treating continued use as agreement, and it gives you the right to object at any time. We have set out above what we use and why so that you can decide. If you want any of it stopped, use Section 6 or email us and we will stop it.
6. How to turn them off
In your browser. Every major browser can block or delete cookies. Remember that blocking the necessary ones breaks checkout.
With the advertising platforms. Meta, Google, TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat and Pinterest each let you limit advert personalisation in their own account settings, and that applies across every site using them, not only ours.
On your phone. On iOS, decline app tracking under Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Tracking. On Android, reset or delete your advertising ID under Settings, then Google, then Ads.
7. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" header or a Global Privacy Control signal to tell a site you do not want to be tracked.
We do not currently detect either signal automatically. We are not going to claim otherwise while it is not built. Until it is, the reliable ways to opt out are the browser and platform controls in Section 6, or emailing [email protected], which reaches a person who will apply the request.
8. Changes
We will update this policy when the cookies we use change or when the law does. The effective date at the top shows the current version.
